Recess? Yes!

Classes at Recess are innovative, enriching and fun. We strive to offer a variety of classes taught by a diverse group of qualified, creative and  charismatic instructors who love kids. At Recess, we encourage your children to get messy, move freely and be themselves!

Classes are offered Monday through Friday and weekend mornings. All classes are 50 minutes long unless otherwise noted. Fall and Winter semesters run for 13 weeks.

Our Winter semester runs from January 9th to April 26th (with no classes MLK day, the week of February 20th-24th, or April 10th).

Our Spring semester is 8 weeks long from May 8th-June 30th, no classes the week of July 4th. Our Summer semester is also 8 weeks long, from July 10th-August 28th

Ballet with Giorgia

Students will be exposed to the disciplines of classical ballet in a creative, fun, and focused environment while learning basic concepts of rhythms and positions.

About the Teacher

Giorgia Bovo was born in Biella, Italy, where she grew up until her dance studies brought her to Firenze to train on full scholarship at Scuola del Balletto di Toscana. After dancing professionally in Italy, she moved to NY and worked with The Metropolitan Opera, Armitage Gone! Dance and Gabrielle Lamb. She currently dances with Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance and Rebecca Kelly Ballet where she also teaches company class. Giorgia is an ABT® Certified Teacher in Pre-Primary through Level 5 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Little Gymsters with Bethany

Little Gymsters is a physical, gym-oriented class that focuses on gross motor skills, muscle development, balance, coordination and fun! Classes will incorporate dynamic movement as well as more structured activities and song to provide a well-rounded foundation for children's physical growth. The small class environment of 6-8 students makes for an intimate learning experience and is great for socialization among children. Adult participation is required.

About the Teacher

Bethany Mitchell was raised in Mission Viejo, California, where she studied dance from a young age at the Ballet Conservatory under the direction of Alan McCarter. She had the pleasure of dancing with many companies in California including Ballet Pacifica in Irvine, State Street Ballet in Santa Barbara, City Ballet of San Diego, and Liss Fain Dance in San Francisco. Bethany moved to New York City in 2012, and currently dances for Battery Dance Company and Indelible Dance. While receiving her B.S. in Business Administration from San Francisco State University, she taught a hybrid program of music and movement at the ODC Dance School and Blue Bear School of Music. Bethany currently teaches at various pre-schools in Manhattan and New Jersey.

Jazz with WeBop

WeBop is an early-childhood jazz education program for children which invites families to stomp, strut and swing to the joyous rhythms of jazz as they learn about the core concepts, instruments, and great performers of jazz. These 45-minute classes are structured as a child-adult dyad, with participation from both child and adult, and offer a creative outlet for children to explore jazz through movement, songs, storytelling and play.

Music with Brian

This class will introduce concepts of rhythm, beats, song-form, lyrics, pitch, tempo, and dynamics. Through performance and demonstration of classic kid songs with a twist, original songs, and a variety of different musical styles, students are engaged and entertained all the while discovering the magic of music!

About the Teacher

Brian Ajjan is an experienced multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, music producer, teacher and performer for kids and adults alike. He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music where he studied jazz and commercial music. As a Brooklyn musician and dad, Brian discovered a passion for sharing his love for music with kids in an effort to inspire and cultivate young minds. He currently performs and teaches children’s music classes at various schools throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan.

About the Teacher

Marisa Jones is an actor/dancer/songwriter/musician from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She attended Texas State University where she received her BFA in acting under the tutelage of The Nanny’s Lauren Lane. She spent the last four summers training at The Performing Arts Project, working and collaborating with a handful of industry professionals. Most recently she was accepted into the 2016 Artists Striving to End Poverty Conference at Julliard and moved to New York. She has taught and assisted at various dance studios and theatre companies around the Southern region of the United States and is looking forward to expanding into the vibrant cultural hub of New York City! She has a passion for teaching and loves cultivating and encouraging growth and creativity in all ages.

Preschool Prep

Preschoolers will get a head-start on independent participation through a gentle separation process. In a classroom and playground environment, students will be exposed to a true preschool environment with art exploration, story time, music, play, transitions and more to provide social, cognitive, and physical development.

Kelly
About the Teacher
Kelindah Schuster (Keli) is an emerging performance and teaching artist living in Brooklyn. She grew up in Indonesia and has taught in Mumbai, Singapore, Normandy, and New York. She received her undergraduate degree in Drama and Gender Studies focusing on collaborative feminist theater and education for peace and justice from Vassar College where she studied with early childhood specialist Deborah Folasco and adolescent psychologist Abigail Baird. 
 
Her recent performance work explores puppetry, clown, animal work, and acrobatics. In NY and abroad she has trained with various theater companies including Theater Mitu, One Year Lease, Frantic Assembly, and The Debate Society. In the past year she has presented work at Dixon Place, Triskelion Arts, Sideshows by the Seashore, The Stonewall Inn, The Tank, Standard Toykraft, Portland Stage, and The Knockdown Center. She performs regularly with Crimson Kitty Productions and The Nobodies. 
 
Kelindah aspires to pursue art therapy in special education and currently teaches at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Marquis Studios, Recess Dumbo, and Child’s Play NY. She believes deeply in the power of art education as a tool to radically reshape the future through nurturing young art-makers and problem-solvers through the principles of unconditional respect, celebration of difference, and creative play!

Little Gymsters

New movers will take their gross motor skills to the next level. Through high-energy movements, songs, games, and props little ones will strengthen their muscles and practice coordination. There will also be a music and movement portion of every class to encourage auditory development and imagination.

In this class, future stars will get an introduction to storytelling, improvisation, and acting technique. Whether they are destined for the stage or screen, Act Up! will create a fun environment to explore ideas and inspire new actors!

Jazzers! Introduction to Dance and Jazz

Jazzers is class for young kids who can't stop dancing! The students will learn basic jazz dance as well as tune up their gross motor skills. The instructor encourages positive learning and self-confidence all while having fun!

All classes for children 2.5 years old or younger are “mommy and me” classes, where parents or caregivers should expect to remain in the classroom and participate in the class with their child. Classes for children 2.5 years old or older are not designed for parent or caregiver participation, and adults should not expect to be present in the classroom during those classes. However, a parent or caregiver should plan to remain on-site at Recess during all classes. You may utilize our lounge area and free Wi-Fi while your child is participating in a class.

*Please note that promotional credits cannot be used towards birthday parties or memberships.*

All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at Recess with the exception of during limited drop-off events.
